Responsibilities*

The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME), University of Michigan (U-M), Ann Arbor, seeks outstanding scholars to apply for multiple full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty positions.  The positions are open to candidates of all ranks, including junior and senior-level appointments. The focus of our search this year is in the areas of thermal sciences and in dynamics, systems, and control. In thermal sciences the focus is on: (i) emerging combustion science topics including fire safety, fuels, engines, efficiency, conservation, power generation, sustainability, and pollutant emissions control; and (ii) thermal and electrochemical materials, devices, and systems research to defossilize heating and cooling. In dynamics, systems, and control we have two focus areas: (i) the nexus of clean energy and autonomy, and (ii) control and optimization of manufacturing for energy technologies. However, all who have strong backgrounds in disciplines relevant to mechanical engineering are welcome to apply. We are especially interested in individuals who are committed to developing research programs and engaging in undergraduate and graduate teaching while demonstrating a commitment to advancing equity, justice, and inclusion as well as eliminating systemic racism and sexism in STEM fields. The candidates' research, teaching, and inclusion statements should define common good or social justice as they apply towards their career goals.

Required Qualifications*

Applicants should have an earned Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or a related field.  We seek strong scholars who will provide inspiration, leadership, and impact in research, teaching, and service and contribute to the diversity, equity, and inclusion goals of the University and Department.

Underfill Statement

This position is posted as Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor. The rank of the selected candidate will depend upon candidate's qualifications.

The University of Michigan has a long and distinguished history.  It was founded in 1817, twenty years before the territory became a state, and was one of the first public universities in the nation. Throughout its nearly 200-year history, it has maintained the highest levels of education, scholarship, and research. Ann Arbor, a vibrant mid-sized city known for its sprawling greenery and exposed-brick facades, its array of enticing eateries and historic theaters, and, of course, Michigan Football, is regularly ranked as one of the best places to live in the nation.

The U-M campus is also less than a thirty-minute drive from the Detroit Metropolitan Airport, a hub for major airlines like Delta, Air Canada, Air France, Spirit Airlines, and American Airlines with over 400 flights to and from Europe, East Asia, and every corner of the United States every day. From Ann Arbor, the Michigan Flyer and D2A2 are very accessible bus services that connect the U-M Ann Arbor campus with DTW and all the offerings of downtown Detroit, like the Detroit Riverwalk, the Detroit Institute of Art, and the world-class eateries in Hamtramck.
