Full Job Description

Responsibilities*

The Department of Behavioral Sciences at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, invites applications for 2 teaching assistants to help in the Understanding Society (SOC 200) Dual Enrollment class with the Detroit Public School students, from October 12, 2024 through December 15, 2024, at the UM Detroit Center (UMDC) on Wednesday evenings from 3:30 - 5:30 pm. 

This will include taking attendance, collecting assignments, facilitating in-class exercises, communicating with students outside of class, and leading discussions of sociological topics.

Teaching assistants are expected to arrive no later than 3:30 every day of the class.

You will assist the professor in managing a group of 25 high-school students, as they engage in sociological activities, complete assignments, and prepare for exams, during and between class sessions.

You will also participate in discussions with the class concerning course topics, theories and concepts, and assist students in understanding course content. 

This position is expected to spend time preparing before each week of class and meet with the professor as needed.

Required Qualifications*

Applicants must have good communication skills, be reliable, and willingness to learn and teach are important for this position.

Applicants must have taken at least SOC 200.

Desired Qualifications*

It would be helpful and have taken either of SOC 308 - Sociological Theory or SOC 350 - Poverty and Inequality.

Experience with tutoring or participation in outreach activities in Detroit Communities is a plus.
