Whatyou'lldo:

The HMH Online Help technical writing team, part of the Technology Solutions Group: Planning, Delivery, and Operations team, focuses on leading and executing the development of supportive and contextual content for teachers, students, and administrators in the digital learning space. This position's primary responsibilities will include technical writing for NWEA products like MAP Growth and MAP Reading Fluency. This role works cross functionally to determine a strategy for supporting the educator experience while helping students to achieve success within HMH platforms and digital solutions.

As a Sr Technical Writer, you have a proven track record developing online help (including context-sensitive help), quick reference guides, and the online publication of content for a variety of online platforms & products. Specifically, the Sr Technical Writer will be responsible for working with stakeholders to first understand complex technical functionality such as rostering and LMS Integrations, then identify or develop the best strategy to deliver performance-support assets in a way that is intuitive and understandable for broad range of users with varying levels of technical expertise.

Responsibilities

  • User Help Content Planning and Execution:Works independently, with minimal guidance on day-to-day work and general instruction on new assignments, to execute a defined strategy and create topic-oriented, procedural or reference information constructed in content authoring software.
  • Development services:Uses best practice knowledge of internal and/or external business issues to improve products or services and resolve issues in creative ways. Supports development and execution of a documentation plan, which includes but is not limited to: constructing online help; creating quick reference guides; storyboarding video content; developing just-in-time task vignettes; utilizing shared services (e.g., Editorial Services) to ensure quality; managing performance-support assets (i.e., centralizing documentation for deployment) Implementation and evaluation services: partner w/ identified resources to ensure content is available via a centralized repository as per the documentation plan; provide continuous evaluation of documentation accuracy and efficacy and identify corrigenda changes accordingly.
  • Online Publication:Utilization of software and content management systems to publish Help content online as well as maintaining a positive user experience in accessing the content. Some HTML and CSS coding may be required as well as expertise with website design and development. Advise on best practices related to content structure, tagging, and SEO. Work to ensure content aligns with accessibility best practices. Conduct pre-production, deployment, QA, and smoke-testing activities.
  • Styles and Standards:Curating and adding to HMH Online Help Styles and Standards Guide to maintain consistency of content across platforms and products; working with User Experience Design team to ensure alignment of styles and standards between the platform/product and Online Help system.
  • Consulting services:Meet with stakeholders and subject-matter experts as needed to perform needs and gap analysis, execute content development, and construct a content/documentation plan. Solves complex problems, taking new perspectives to utilize existing solutions or works independently to identify new methods or techniques.
  • Platform Copywriting Support:develop and review content for platform/product user interface as needed to support the HMH User Experience Design team; maintain close collaboration with User Experience team to ensure alignment of content development between platform and Help system; advise on decisions for platform/product functionality and features such as button placement and descriptions, leveraging knowledge of user behavior within the Help system to identify areas for improvement within the platform/product itself
  • Quick Reference Guides (QRGs):Short documents or interactive media that provide concise practical information and advice on particular topics.
  • Analytics and Usage:access and interpret Google analytics reports on user behavior within the Help system to continually propose and implement improvements based on actual usage; propose changes and improvements to in-platform supports or other onboarding/walkthrough systems leveraging knowledge of seasonal user behaviors.

Whatyou'llneed:

  • At least 5+ years of technical writing experience with bachelor's degree
  • Must be an expert with authoring and publishing content in MadCap Flare functionality and capabilities; experience with Adobe RoboHelp is highly desirable
  • Advanced experience working with software engineering teams and technical troubleshooting with content publication and testing
  • Excellent technical writing skills related to online documentation, help files, procedures, and technical documentation
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure
  • Ability to work independently and be self-directed (minimal guidance)
  • Ability to collaborate with team to successfully deliver projects
  • Excellent interpersonal and effective communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Excellent strategic, organizational, and analytical skills
  • Experience with learning management system (LMS) operations
  • Industry experience working within an agile software development environment
  • Experience accessing and interpreting usage data to inform content decisions

Preferred but not necessary:

  • Working knowledge of Agile process and JIRA
  • Experience implementing technology, LMS, blogs, wikis, forums, et cetera
  • Video development, editing and narration for short Help tutorials
  • Spanish language proficiency to support growing ELL student population

Physical Requirements:

  • Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing).
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
  • Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings.
  • Ability to work in cross-functional teams and as well as work independently.

Benefits and Salary Range:

Salary Range -$84,150 to $102,850.Our salary ranges are based on national averages.We have wide ranges so we can be flexible and determine compensation based on a number of factors including the candidate's skills, experience, education, and location.
