Location:

This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with onsite requirements on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday assigned to Grand Rapids Service Center located in Grand Rapids, MI (other locations within West Michigan may be considered as well). The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance from any of the locations or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).

We are looking for: Senior Electrical Project Engineer

The Senior Electrical Program Engineer is responsible for the engineering and technical disciplines needed to complete a project. The Senior Electrical Program Engineer works to plan projects, establish project criteria, coordinate project reviews, and ensure the proper implementation of project elements. They will schedule, plan, forecast, resource and manage all the technical activities aiming at assuring project accuracy and quality from conception to completion.

This position will be working in the Generation Design group. Generation Design provides engineering leadership for capital projects at Consumers Energy generation sites. The sites include solar, wind, hydro, coal, and gas generation. Project types can vary from new generation to plant modifications and maintenance. The department consists of a multidiscipline group of program engineers to support the capital projects.

The knowledge and skills involved with this position include but are not limited to:

  • Knowledge of control systems; DCS, PLCs, relay-based logic and instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of AC/DC power systems, grounding, protection, generators, exciters, breakers, switchgear, load centers, MCC and other electrical systems
  • Knowledge of the design, construction, or operation of electric generating plants and/or heavy industrial plants
  • Knowledge in project management including safety leadership, schedule logic and implementation, procurement and construction means and methods
  • Knowledge of industry and building codes and standards as they relate to discipline specific design and construction
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent knowledge of design and visualizations software such as AutoCAD
  • Proficient in MS Office, with aptitude for learning new software
  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong understanding of GD&T principles
  • Familiarity with rules, regulations, best practices, and performance standards

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program with four (4) or more years of experiencein a program engineer capacity
    • [OR] Bachelor's degree in engineering from a non-ABET accredited program along with a Professional Engineering license (PE) with four (4) or more years of experiencein a program engineer capacity

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in power systems analysis design and operation.
  • Experience with DCS, PLCs and other industrial control systems
  • Experience working in power plants and/or heavy industrial setting
  • Electrical project engineering experience
  • Experience in reviewing designs to assure compliance with engineering design, applicable codes, constructability, and industry standards
  • Experience in procurement of engineered material, equipment, and professional services

In this role, you will:

  • Manage all electrical technical aspects of assigned project during design, construction, commissioning, and closeout
  • Support various plant modernization projects focused on optimizing power generation
  • Support new renewable energy generation projects (solar, wind, battery, hydro and pumped storage) during design, construction, and closeout phase of projects
  • Develop scopes of work to hire external engineering firms. Manage external engineering firms during design, construction, and closeout phase of projects
  • Prepare, schedule, coordinate and monitor the assigned engineering projects
  • Assign responsibilities and mentor project team
  • Build strong partnerships with business partners and deeply understand their business goals
  • Interact with clients, interpreting their needs and requirements, and representing them in the field
  • Support the Agile project delivery cadence by helping balance team performance with tight deadlines
  • Develop specifications for the project's needed equipment
  • Monitor compliance to applicable codes, practices, QA/QC policies, performance standards and specifications
  • Review engineering deliverables and initiate appropriate corrective actions
  • Review the engineering tasks and initiate the necessary corrective actions
  • Provide assistance and technical support to project managers and other project participants
  • collaborate with other senior engineers to create more efficient project methods and to maintain the project's profitability
  • Perform quality control tasks on budgets, schedules, plans, and personnel performance and reporting on the project's status
  • Other non-essential duties as assigned or may be necessary
