ABOUT THE POSITION
Under general direction, the Temporary Aviation Support Manager assigned to the helicopter is responsible for the activities at a helibase to assure the efficient operations of a fire helicopter; conducts daily pilot briefing that includes weather, incident activity, safety topics and regional aircraft status; and performs other duties as required. This is a temporary position during the peak wildland fire season (4-6 months) with a 40-hour per week schedule to support the needs of the Department. ABOUT YOU
Our Highly Qualified Candidate must be able to exercise sound, independent judgment. They have personal and professional integrity, possesses initiative, is organized, has excellent oral and written communication skills, and is tactful. They are able to work independently under general guidance and work in both routine and emergency settings. The ideal candidate must be able to calmly relay dispatch information to flight crew and provides preflight operational briefing. They are capable of completing multiple tasks and projects as they are assigned and can effectively make decisions with little to no supervision. The ideal candidate possesses the ability to maintain time records for incident cost recovery and aircraft use. They understand the importance to maintain the helibase facilities in a manner that supports its expansion in the event of an extended attack fire.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Principles of chemistry of fire, and fire behavior.
- Communication tools and best practices in providing information to the public.
- Basic concepts of GIS mapping, data collection and analysis.
- Record keeping and statistical data compilation and analysis.
- Air tanker capabilities and limitations.
- Tool and equipment usage and maintenance.
- Effects of weather on fire.
- Fire control safety procedures.
- Wildland fire control practices and principles.
- Radio codes.
- Basic mathematics.
- Department safety policies, procedures and standards.
- Principles of management
Ability to:
- Plan, organize and coordinate daily pilot briefing that includes weather, incident activity, safety topics and regional aircraft status.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties.
- Read and interpret maps, federal, state, and local fire regulations, and other complex technical documents, and disseminate the information to the customer.
- Appraise an emergency and initiate an effective course of action quickly.
- Manage the public and crew members with patience, tact and courtesy.
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in written form.
- Maintain accurate records and prepare clear and concise reports and other written materials.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of education, training and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to qualify is equivalent to one (1) year of fire suppression and/or prevention management experience.
Certificates and Licenses
All candidates must have the following at the time of application:- Class C Basic Driver's License is required and must be maintained throughout employment with the County.
- Positions require travel between various County and business-related locations. Employees who drive on County business to carry out job-related duties must possess a valid California driver's license for the class of vehicle driven and meet automobile insurability requirements of the County including review of a recent DMV history. Applicants are required to furnish a recent DMV driving record.
Highly Desirable
Fire service aviation experience and/or current or past qualification as a HMGB (Helicopter Manager - Single Resource), or HCWN (Helicopter Manager - Call When Needed).
