Job Summary
The University of Michigan Museum of Natural History is seeking a creative, enthusiastic Social Media & Design Intern.
The Social Media & Design Intern will work closely with the Assistant Director of Marketing & Communications to assess, maintain, and grow the museum?s social media presence on Facebook and Instagram. Other platforms may be added in future, although please note that per LSA policy the museum does not have a TikTok or Snapchat.
The Social Media & Design Intern will also be tasked with designing visual content; this is primarily intended for social media/web purposes, but there will be opportunities to expand the role into other types of design depending on the successful candidate?s skills and interests.
This position will be supervised by the Assistant Director of Marketing & Communications. While many parts of this role can be done remotely, occasional on-site work will be required.
This is a non-exempt, part-time (10 hours weekly), temporary position. Hours will be a mix of fixed and flexible.

About the Museum
The spectacular new University of Michigan Museum of Natural History (UMMNH) opened in 2019 in the award-winning, state-of-the art Biological Sciences Building (BSB) after moving from its former home next door. The new museum puts the building?s science on display, highlights current U-M research, and welcomes visitors of all ages and backgrounds. With changing and interactive exhibits, a landmark Planetarium & DomeTheater, two public hands-on labs, and all-new programs, UMMNH is an exciting and important new STEM educational resource and a destination for
the public. Marketing and communications efforts support the new museum by driving attendance, sales, and awareness as well as membership and fundraising materials and initiatives.
Responsibilities*
- Develop creative social media content to promote exhibits, special events, scientific research, and museum collections
- Collaborate with Marketing & Communications team on long-term strategic planning for social media
- Monitor Facebook and Instagram messages to respond promptly and appropriately to public inquiries during working hours
- Research trends, best practices, and audience behaviors as needed
- Track key metrics and conduct data-driven campaigns
- Assist with video and graphic production
Required Qualifications*
- Strong organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail
- Experience with creating content for social media
- Basic understanding of accessibility principles pertaining to social media
- Interest in and experience with creating inclusive content for diverse audiences
- Ability to write snappy, audience-friendly short-form marketing copy
- Familiarity with creating graphics in programs such as Canva or Photoshop
- Basic understanding of visual design principles
Desired Qualifications*
- Experience with public-facing science communications
- Experience planning and executing social media campaigns and/or calendars
- Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and/or InDesign
- Experience with video editing techniques and approaches
- Occasional weekend availability to document on-site events
- Experience with crisis communications, comment moderation, and/or audience management (especially around sensitive topics)
Preference will be given to candidates who include examples of past design work.

Additional Information
This part time position will have the option of a remote work schedule to be negotiated on hire.
Reports to: Assistant Director of Marketing & Communications
Payrate: $15 per hour
