Job Summary:
The Wind and Metocean – Lead Engineer is a critical role within the Offshore Business focusing on the delivery of one Key Package. As such, the individual will be working as part of a multicultural and multinational team in the management of contracts worth more than a billion dollars. The candidate will be responsible for defining and implementing robust and cost-effective engineering strategies and plans, supporting technical management of $ multi-million contracts and delivery phase including management of multiple offshore contractors and associated interfaces, defining company and business engineering standards and technical acceptance criteria, and ensuring quality, best practices and excellent H&SE performance are applied. The candidate will be managing engineering activities and decisions from a senior engineering perspective across the offshore project portfolio.
The individual will be working as part of Avangrid Renewables Offshore Business in the US but will be oversighting activities in many countries across Europe and the rest of the world. The position may require frequent travel to various locations overseas and during development, contracting and delivery of the key package. Furthermore, the individual should be prepared to coordinate work with teams working at different locations.
Position Specifics
The Wind and Metocean – Lead Engineer will be responsible to:
• Deliver state of the art expertise as technical lead in marine climatology, providing metocean inputs fundamental for the design of offshore assets, across all stages of the different offshore wind Projects: development, feasibility study, FEED, detailed design, construction, and operations.
• Manage metocean measurement campaigns for development, construction, and generation.
• Manage works with key external consultants, suppliers, and partners to deliver key advice and compliance, including Wind Turbine OEMs and Foundation designer.
• Undertake analytical work, including preliminary assessment of site conditions and adverse weather downtime assessments; ensuring metocean data are analyzed and interpreted correctly to guarantee the durability and stability of structures and the safety of offshore operations.
• Ensure the reliability of metocean data by managing the metocean database throughout the lifetime of a project.
• Maintain full awareness of the latest technical and commercial developments and identify suitable new technology that has the potential to reduce cost and risk or improve safety.
• Representing Avangrid- Iberdrola on task forces and research programs at industry level.
• Recommending appropriate technical strategies and delivering technical input to commercial agreements and contracts to ensure project risks related metocean conditions are mitigated.
• Provide detailed metocean conditions information to serve as input to design basis of the different project packages: WTGs, Foundations, OSS, O&M, etc.
• Development of metocean conditions analysis solutions for cross-project implementation.
• Collaborate with construction and O&M teams to provide ad-hoc support where necessary and ensure Metocean Conditions requirements are specified and delivered.
• Manage the certification process related Metocean Conditions with independent verification bodies (where applicable) to reduce design risk and enhance asset value.
• Assist Wind Resource Manager with wind and energy resource assessment activities for early and mid-stage projects, especially for floating wind projects.
• Assist Wind Resource Manager with compiling summary wind, metocean, and energy documentation and data for internal and external stakeholders for FID, RFP bids, and financing.
Responsibilities:
• Lead Engineer for a scope of work within Avangrid offshore projects leading technical assessment and recommendations to ensure delivery of a scope of work within time, to budget and quality following industry best practice and observing the maximum diligence for HSQE requirements.
• Implement the required engineering processes throughout the project lifecycle phases, whilst liaising with the project team to maximise lessons learned and best practices.
• Provide key strategic Engineer technical advice, assessment, and recommendations to the offshore business in support of a growing offshore wind pipeline to ensure delivery of business strategic investment plan within time, to budget and quality following the highest industry practice and observing the maximum respect for Health, Safety, and the Environment to ensure regulatory and legal compliance.
• Provide expert Engineer advice on appropriate bid levels / programme strategies / engineering strategies / risk levels and commercial agreements relative to $ multi-million, multi-disciplinary, multi-contract projects and large work packages, to ensure that cost effective technical solutions are identified, fully evaluated and the risk profile is fully understood by the projects and wider business.
• Ensure that all assessment, advice, and recommendations are fully documented in accordance with all internal procedures and industry best practice, and that sufficient technical and commercial due diligence (whether internal or external) exists to support those business decisions.
• Implement the inspection and commissioning of appropriate aspects of offshore plant to ensure that assets are supplied and installed to the required quality and engineering standards.
• Ensure that health and safety and environmental requirements are fully considered and adhered to in design to ensure compliance with legislation and industry best practice.
• Maintain full awareness of the latest Engineering technical developments and identify and assess suitable new technology (including software and analytical tools) that has the potential to reduce cost and risk or improve safety.
• Remain current with ongoing community research and internal innovation activities. Incorporate proven research results into actionable tools/methodologies.
• Comply with relevant offshore standards, procedures, tools, best practices, and quality requirements for the scope of work to ensure that the scope of work is delivered according to specification, budget, and programme without compromising safety.
• Ensure all lessons learned regarding offshore delivery are captured and shared across the different offshore packages. Establish the right mechanisms for this process and ensuring teams and substantial package implement them to capture and enhance business value.
Job requirements:
General skills, knowledge, and experience
• 5+ years of proven experience on metocean engineering and oceanography
• Ability to manage external consultants, suppliers, and partners effectively to deliver required outputs in a timely manner.
• Competent in future planning. Proven experience in delivery and contracting management and programming.
• Experience in offshore windfarm, marine works or oil and gas delivery and marine operations.
• Experience in tendering processes, contract negotiations and commercial delivery of contracts
• Sound relationship management skills and confidence working with more senior project managers.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to influence and develop key project and business decisions.
• Good report writing, presentation skills and ability to summarize key parameters and drivers impacting the project and business.
• Ability to communicate highly technical information to a broad audience.
• Ability to work and manage decision making process under pressure and to tight deadlines.

Position specific requirements
• BSc/MSc in a relevant scientific discipline (engineering, oceanography, meteorology or similar)
• Ability to understand and manage complex technical issues which require interface and precise coordination with multiple disciplines.
• Very strong skills on coding for numerical engineering applications with MATLAB or similar (i.e., Python)
• Expertise in performing statistical analyses of wind, wave, water level and current data.
• Understanding of water wave mechanics, winds and wind loads, and ocean currents.
• Understanding and experience with extreme value analysis in context of tropical cyclones.
• Understanding and ability to perform wind and energy resource assessments when required.
• Familiarity with oceanographic and meteorological instrumentation and equipment and data analysis.
• Experience with numerical metocean and wind mesoscale modelling.
• Understanding of statistical extreme value analysis, with particular regarding wind and waves.
• Experience of the implementation of metocean information for the purpose of loads
analysis.
• Knowledge of LiDAR technology, including Floating LiDAR market.
• Knowledge of applicable standards for the Offshore Wind Industry.
