Scientist - Translational Bacteriology

Join AstraZeneca, a global, innovation-driven biopharmaceutical business that focuses on the discovery, development, and commercialization of prescription medicines for some of the world's most serious diseases. We are seeking a highly motivated Scientist with experience in microbiology, specifically in developing and analyzing novel assays for vaccine candidates and antimicrobial products for bacterial pathogens. As a Scientist in our Translational Medicine group, you will be a key member of a team focused on supporting projects in clinical development.

Accountabilities:

In this role, you will execute biochemical and cell-based assays to characterize candidate vaccines and monoclonal antibodies targeting bacterial pathogens. You will apply molecular biology skills to generate recombinant proteins and bacteria, develop and qualify bioanalytical assays to characterize candidate drugs, assist in the preparation and review of bioanalytical data for reports suitable for regulatory submission, and communicate across the team and with management.

Essential Skills/Experience:

- BS degree with 2+ years' experience or MS degree with 1+ years' experience

- Knowledge of bacterial pathogens and pathogenesis

- Background in molecular biology techniques such as cloning, site-directed mutagenesis, DNA and RNA isolation and purification, sequencing, RT-PCR

- Experience in bacterial and mammalian cell culture, opsonophagocytic killing and cytotoxicity assays.

- Ability to evaluate data quality, troubleshoot, and interpret experimental results

- Meticulous tracking and documenting of results in laboratory notebooks, databases, and scientific reports

- Strong verbal and written communication skills

Desirable Skills/Experience:

- Prior experience in the biopharmaceutical industry preferable but not required

- A proven track record of productivity; contributions to scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals

- Ability to multitask and prioritize different projects

- Job complexity: Must be able to understand, conduct and interpret results of experiments independently with limited supervision

- Ability to work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment while planning and meeting timelines
