We are currently looking for a hardworking, scientifically curious Research Technician to work in the lab of Dr. Mike Eisen at the University of California, Berkeley. The Eisen laboratory is interested in short snippets of non-coding DNA - so-called transcriptional "enhancers" - that regulate gene expression in animal genomes. Using Drosophila as a model organism, Eisen and his team combine evolutionary and computational genomics, high-resolution imaging, genome engineering, and classical biochemistry and genetics to study the greater than 1,000 enhancers active during early fly embryogenesis. The team's current focus is understanding how enhancer sequence integrates information from the proteins that bind to them to regulate patterns of gene expression. For more information about the lab visit Eisenlab.com

The ideal candidate is an organized, detail-oriented individual who will be responsible for working with other scientists to understand key areas of developmental gene regulation, including investigation of enhancer sequence function and chromatin regulators during embryo development.

What we provide:

  • Hands on training on molecular biology, genetics and genomics techniques and computational analyses.

  • Opportunities to present your research in the lab and at conferences.

  • Opportunities to develop critical thinking and propose new experiments and project directions.

  • Assistance in preparing for graduate school applications and interviews.

  • One on one mentorship with a postdoc in the lab.

  • Opportunity to work in a diverse and encouraging research environment.

  • A vibrant and inclusive cultural environment in Berkeley, CA, with easy access to San Francisco and the North California area.

  • A competitive compensation package with comprehensive health and welfare benefits including an employee education assistance program.

What you'll do:

  • Perform genetic, molecular, and genomic experiments for ongoing research projects investigating enhancer function and chromatin regulation in Drosophila embryos.

  • Ability to take initiative, prioritize tasks, work independently, use good judgment, and monitor completion of assigned duties.

  • Ability to operate complex scientific equipment.

  • Fully understands role in the work unit and in related units as well as understanding how the job relates to the organization.

  • Follow instruction with an eagerness to learn, grow professionally, and be mentored.

  • Ability to interact positively with all levels of staff.

  • Work efficiently, be adaptable, and be self-motivated.

What you bring:

  • A bachelor's degree in the biological sciences, in an appropriate field; or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience.

  • Knowledge of laboratory protocols and techniques.

  • Previous hands-on laboratory experience is required. Laboratory experience obtained during undergraduate studies is acceptable and will be considered.

  • Previous hands-on experience with molecular biology techniques and genetic analysis is required.

  • Previous experience with in situ hybridization, microscopy and processing of imaging data would be a plus.

  • Previous experience with Drosophila genetics, Drosophila cell culture or other types of cell culture would be a plus.

  • Experience with computational analysis of genomics data would be beneficial. Good verbal and written communication skills.

  • Good organizational skills, prioritization skills, time management skills, and meticulous attention to detail.

  • Digital literacy or desire to learn programming. Some knowledge of programming using python and/R would be a plus.
