Job Summary
Provide clinical leadership in the nursing care of individuals, families and groups in the Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) area. Collaborate with team members and associated resource persons to provide continuity in patient care. Participate with health team members for problem solving areas. Organization Relationships: Directly reports to the Clinical Nursing Supervisor, Manager of the Psychiatric Emergency Department, Medical Director of PES and has a functional relationship with the Director of Patient Care Services for Nursing. Collaborates with nurses, physicians and other health care groups in the hospital and community.

Responsibilities*
Patient Care:
- Utilize the nursing process to provide bio-psychosocial nursing care to the patient/family and document that process on the patient record.
- Recognize patients/family's needs that require intervention by other resources, make referrals and contact the appropriate internal department.
- Patient Education: Assess and teach patients and families about psychiatric disorders and the application of the therapeutic plan.
- Act as an advocate of the patient/family in interactions with the inpatient and community teams. Use the process of triage to assist the patient in obtaining timely and appropriate care consulting with the health team as necessary.
- Work collaboratively with other team members to provide continuity of patient and family care.
- Assist physicians with treatments and examinations and carry out medical orders.
- Provide support to patient/families through utilization of both verbal and nonverbal communication techniques appropriate for age and physical condition.
- Liaison with other UM Health System nurses in coordination of care.
- Conduct standardized clinical rating scales as requested.
- Report incidents, problems or concerns in a timely fashion utilizing appropriate communication channels.
Education:
- Serve as a resource for staff by sharing skills and knowledge related to clinical area.
- May assist in providing appropriate learning experiences for students and others assigned to the area.
- Orient new staff to the nursing role in the clinical area.
Quality Assurance/Research:
- Collaboration of nursing Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) as appropriate.
- Participate in continuous quality improvement by involvement in teams, as appropriate, and by supporting changes recommended through the continuous quality improvement process.
Management of the Unit:
- Provide clinical support to include triage, physical assessment and determination of patient care required for given shift as assigned.
- Participate with other health team members in problem solving related to the management of the clinical unit.
- Participate in area staff meetings for problem identification, problem solving and operational planning.
- Assist in planning and policy making by participation in committee work as requested.
- Assist in the development of standards, methods and tools to improve patient care.
Clinical Leadership:
- Demonstrates professional commitment towards responsibility, accountability, dress and behavior.

- Utilize assertiveness skills.
- Demonstrate effective work organization under stress.
Professional Development:
- Attend continuing education conferences/seminars, staff development programs and mandatory programs.

- Evaluates own performance periodically with PES Manager.

Salary & Nursing Framework Level:
This UMPNC RN posting is posted as Nursing Framework LEVEL C.
Actual Nursing Framework LEVEL and salary will be determined at time of hire.
Nursing Framework levels range from Level A to Level F.
Required qualifications must be met by the candidate in order to be interviewed and considered for the position. Posting may be filled after the initial 5-day posting period. Required Qualifications*
Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Michigan
Two (2) years (within the last 5yrs) of Emergency Department or ICU RN experience, or Psych RN experience

Desired Qualifications*
Psychiatric ED, inpatient or community based RN experience
Certification in Psychiatric Nursing
Demonstrated effective interpersonal and communication skills
Demonstrated effectiveness in working with multi-discipline professional groups.
MI Chart experience
Experience as a charge nurse or equivalent leadership
Experience leading nursing practice/quality improvement initiatives
CPI or NAPPI Certification
Work Schedule
Shift/ Hours: 0.9 fte (36hrs/week) Nights/Evenings, 12hrs 7p-7a or 3p-3a, every other weekend
* Scheduling flexibility required

All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census.
