Position Summary
The R&D Scientist, Product Development is responsible for understanding the needs of pets and pet parents, and translating those needs into technical requirements and consumer models to drive business impact. This individual will leverage technical thinking to bring together consumer needs, science, and technology into successful product innovation and renovation. The scientist will have one or more defined areas of technical expertise, leading technology or capability advances, and will work on significant business and technical challenges.
This role will involve close collaboration with cross-functional teams such as Legal, Regulatory, Marketing, Customer Service, Quality Assurance, Business Development, Sales, and Operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Apply fundamental scientific principles and creativity to develop novel products.
- Lead the formulation and development of new pet food and/or treat products to meet unmet consumer needs.
- Stay informed about new ingredients and technologies, and recommend them for consideration when appropriate.
- Implement all technical aspects of the formulation/product development process, ensuring tasks are completed according to plan.
- Develop and publish product formulations and finished product specifications.
- Coordinate and manage sensory/palatability testing, shelf life/stability testing, and other key technical project deliverables.
- Author or contribute to technical proposals, summaries, presentations, and project reports.
- Maintain technical documentation, including laboratory notebooks and invention records.
- Lead functional teams or projects with moderate resource requirements, risk, and complexity.
- Solve complex problems, applying a broad perspective to identify creative and innovative solutions.
- Work independently, with guidance only in complex situations that have functional or organizational impact.
- Collaborate with and leverage relationships across functional teams to achieve shared goals.
- Partner with team members to develop key tasks and project plans to ensure timely goal completion.
- Represent R&D as Technical Lead on cross-functional teams as needed.
- Follow GMPs and Food Safety guidelines.
- Bachelor's degree in science, Technology, or Engineering.
- At least 3 years of experience in Research & Development.
- Strong understanding of ingredient nutrient delivery (bioavailability, nutrient-nutrient, ingredient-nutrient, and process-nutrient interactions).
- Familiarity with the Concept 5 application system to maintain ingredient nutrient, cost, and formulation target and constraint data.
- Previous experience in the CPG (Consumer Packaged Goods) industry is highly preferred.
- Dry/wet pet food and pet treat formulation and product development experience is a plus.
- Experience working with contract manufacturers/co-packers is a plus.
- Fundamental knowledge of food processing and food science is a plus.
- Advanced knowledge of AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) regulations is a plus.
