Additional Information About the Role

Our hospital Rabbi not only supports Jewish patients and their needs but also will serve as our Oncology service line chaplain.  Spiritual Care Services is well integrated in the life of the hospital and this position will have opportunities to develop professional relationships with clinicians from every discipline.  Our Spiritual Care team is collegial and highly functioning and welcomes and supports new staff well.  If you’re looking to grow your skills and develop further, Barnes-Jewish is the place for you.

Days will be Sunday-Thursday with time 8a-430p.


Overview

Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center is the largest hospital in Missouri and is ranked as one of the nation's top hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. Barnes-Jewish Hospital's staff is composed of full-time academic faculty and community physicians of Washington University School of Medicine, supported by a house staff of residents, interns, fellows and other medical professionals. Recognizing its excellence in nursing care, Barnes-Jewish Hospital was the first adult hospital in Missouri to be certified as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

The Spiritual Care Services department is made up of four service lines: Chaplaincy, Chaplaincy Education, Palliative Care Consult Services and Ethics Committee support. Each of these service lines participates within the healthcare interdisciplinary teams at Barnes-Jewish Hospital with the goal of healing body, mind and spirit. Department personnel are comprised of Board Certified Professional Chaplains, Chaplain Director, ACPE Chaplain Supervisor, Chaplain Manager, Chaplain Residents, Contractual Chaplains, Medical Director and physician of Palliative Care Consult Services, Palliative Care Nurse Practitioners, Social Workers, Administrative Assistants and medical, chaplaincy, social work, nursing students rotating through these services.


Preferred Qualifications

Role Purpose

Provides professional spiritual care, consultation and short term counseling for patients, families and staff as a member of the interdisciplinary care team. Serves as a resource for Jewish patients, families and staff throughout the hospital as needed. Serves as the voice for the tenets of the Jewish faith in relationships with BJH Leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct spiritual care to patients and families.
  • Provides direct pastoral care to staff and physicians, as needed, complementing staff support services provided by others.
  • Provides leadership for compassionate, responsive and faithful care of Jewish patients, their families, hospital staff and physicians.
  • Provides consultation to other members of the care team regarding Jewish spiritual issues and resources in patient and family care and regarding ethics.
  • Minimum Requirements

    Education

  • Master's Degree

    Experience

  • 4 Units ACPE CPE (2 Level II)
  • Board Chaplain APC,NACC,AJC
  • Special Ministry Endorsement
  • Ordination as Rabbi
