The Principal Writer collaborates with other dynamic individuals on the marketing and sales teams, producing differentiated copy primarily for digital communications, such as websites, blogs, social media, and email campaigns, as well as traditional marketing and sales efforts.
The Principal Writer is recognized as a subject-matter expert, and will need to tailor copy and content to specific audiences including B2B, B2C, and University partners. We are committed to delivering high-quality, high-impact assets for all of our stakeholders.
The ideal candidate works well across departments and teams, can turn around materials and edits within the timeline created by the project manager, and is a highly creative and analytical leader.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Quickly grasp sophisticated concepts and information in the form of briefs, white papers, etc., and distill/synopsize into engaging, compelling, content that effectively sells our products to a target audience
- Understand complex business situations, communications objectives and content strategies, then deliver effective, branded content for individual communications and multi-stage campaigns
- Deliver creative rationale, and confidently present and defend work
- Manage large writing projects and the process from draft to final with limited oversight.
- Be familiar with best writing practices for a variety of digital formats, including websites, blogs, social media, email campaigns, short- and long-form content including articles and brochure-ware
- Effectively apply audience segmentation as well as brand/tone voice, to speak to different audiences
- Collaborate with other business partners, stakeholders, e.g. project managers, designers, content strategists, etc.
- Provide as-needed writing support for ongoing US Higher Ed initiatives and events, including Capella/Strayer commencement
- Passionate about the art and craft of writing, with a lifelong learner attitude – desire to continuously develop/expand skillset
- Coaching/mentoring and reviewing the work of lower-level professionals and contract worker support
- Comfortable with doing research, and interviewing people for case studies, blogs, testimonials or other content
Job Skills:
- Demonstrate work examples of effective campaigns utilizing copy and editorial voice
- Well-rounded understanding of marketing and sales strategy
- Ability to interact, communicate, and present ideas clearly
- Strong editing skills and attention to detail

- Able to remain calm, focused and detail-oriented in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment, efficiently juggling many projects simultaneously
- Able to consistently adhere to Associate Press (AP) and our brands’ style guidelines.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
Work Experience:
- Strong portfolio of work in a variety of formats including both print and web/digital media.
- 8+ years of relevant writing experience
- Agency and/or corporate experience desired
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience.
Other:
- Must be able to travel occasionally should a business need arise. For most roles travel would not be common. Travel may involve plane, car or metro. In accordance with ADA policies, reasonable accommodations regarding travel limitations can be provided. Travel will be more common for roles such as Account Executives (25 - 50%), senior leaders (10 – 20%) or Capella Core Faculty (5 – 10%).
- Ability to work onsite in Corporate or Campus location (in a typical office environment) may be required based on role. If so, this would include being mobile within the office, including movement from floor-to-floor using elevators or stairs.
- If offsite or hybrid role, must have access to work in setting which enables meeting all requirements of the role (including privacy, reliable internet access, phone, ability to video conference, etc.) at a remote location.
