SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
Under direction, to take charge of patrol, investigation, and law enforcement; and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The position of a police sergeant is distinguished from positions in the next lower class by performing duties requiring extensive law enforcement experience. A sergeant will often supervise police patrol duties or investigations on an assigned shift and take the lead over subordinate or reserve personnel in deciding courses of action and proper methods and techniques. Specialized responsibilities are often assigned to incumbents including coordination of the reserve officer program, supervision of the vehicle maintenance program, and performance of more difficult investigative work.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
Supervises the patrol and law enforcement activities during an assigned shift; as well as but not limited to, investigations of complaints and crime reports to determine if a crime has been committed; supervises and participates in the protection of crime scenes, the gathering of evidence, questioning of witnesses, and apprehension of suspects; takes charge of and delegates the collecting of facts and evidence at the scene of crimes and traffic accidents; prepares cases for trail and may personally appear in court to present the evidence and testimony; maintains contact with other law enforcement agencies; patrols, observing known gathering places of criminal activity; prepares reports of accidents, crimes and complaints investigated; checks building security; gives information and direction to the public; shall review reports submitted by officers; prepares reports of shift activity; coordinates the scheduling and training of reserve officers; oversees a program of vehicle maintenance of patrol cars.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Modern police methods and procedures, including patrol, crime prevention, traffic control, basic investigation, and identification techniques; criminal law with particular reference to apprehension, arrest, and custody of persons accused of misdemeanors and felonies; rules of evidence pertaining to search and seizure and preservation of evidence in court; recent court decisions on arrest procedures and the handling of suspects and prisoners, principles of supervision and training.

ABILITY TO:
Provide lead supervision to other law enforcement personnel; analyze situations effectively and interpret and apply laws and regulations; obtain a standard first aid certification; demonstrate keen powers of observation and memory; exercise good judgment in personal encounters and relationships with the general public; meet standards as established by the City of Dos Palos police department; meet other related employment standards as may be established by the City in connection with the state commission on peace officer standards; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other law enforcement agencies, departmental employees and the general public.

KNOWLEDGE: 
Know criminal law, modern police procedures, community-oriented policing, and criminal investigation techniques.

EXPERIENCE:
Have a least five years of service as a police officer.

PHYSICAL ABILITY:
Meet established standards for physical endurance, agility, and vision.

EDUCATIONAL: 
Having the equivalent to completion of the 12th grade (I.e. GED or Diploma) associate or bachelor's degree in a related field, such as criminal justice, public administration, or business administration is preferred.

CERTIFICATION:
Have a P.O.S.T. Intermediate Certificate, Advance Certificate preferred.

DRIVER'S LICENSE:
Have a valid California driver's license.

PSYCHOLOGICAL SCREENING:
Pass a psychological screening conducted by a licensed psychologist or psychiatrist.

LEADERSHIP:
Be a leader and motivator who exemplifies professionalism.

TEAMWORK:
Be Able to work effectively as a team member and team leader.

MEDICAL:
Ability to pass a medical examination with no reported restrictions.
