Responsibilities*

Community Resource Navigation

  • Identify and maintain comprehensive knowledge of community resources related to substance use recovery, mental health, prenatal care, housing, employment, transportation, and other support services
  • Work in collaboration with team social workers to actively seek out new resources and maintain connections with community services to support clients

Peer Support & Advocacy

  • Advocate for clients? needs in various settings, including during case reviews, prenatal appointments, and interactions with health care /social services providers.
  • Build trusting relationships based on a shared experience level and share personal recovery journey when appropriate.
  • Serve as a truth teller by exercising honesty and noticing repeated behaviors to ensure clients receive accurate information and support.
  • Provide assistance through MOUD initiation and maintenance 
  • If desired, accompany patients during triage/ER visits and the birth hospitalization 

Mentorship

  • Demonstrate positive coping techniques, resiliency, and a commitment to long-term recovery
  • Collaborate with clients to develop and apply realistic and sustainable recovery plans
  • Assist clients in setting goals that foster their health, wellbeing, and recovery goals.
  • Offer mentorship and share personal insights encouraging clients to adopt their lifestyle choices.

Confidante 

  • Serve as a confidante, ensuring a safe space for clients to share their experiences and challenges
  • Maintain confidentiality under Michigan Medicine and HIPPA standards.
  • Act as a cheerleader by celebrating clients? progress and milestones.

Administration

  • Maintain organized client files with up-to-date notes.
  • Attend case reviews to update the clinical team on support services needed.
  • Assist with maintaining up to date recovery resources to share with clients and team members 

Community Education

  • Present to groups of clinicians, health care workers and community members on effective support for birthing people with OUD/SUD 
  • Review presentations/materials to provide patient perspective on communication strategies 

Required Qualifications*

  • A minimum of 2 years in long-term recovery from substance use.
  • CPRM or CPRC certification within 1 year of hire/transfer date 
  • Comfortable sharing recovery journey with clients
  • In-depth knowledge of available community resources related to substance use, mental health, prenatal care, and tangible needs support.
  • Familiarity with Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) and comfortability supporting clients receiving MOUD.
  • Desire to complete Doula training and openness to attending births
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Ability to communicate effectively across disciplines and within a variety of cultures
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to receive and convey information clearly and concisely for various mediums.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, and the ability to work effectively with diverse groups
  • A high degree of initiative and resourcefulness
  • Demonstrated problem solving, conflict resolution, and critical thinking skills

Desired Qualifications*

  • Comfortable using Zoom, Google Suite, and Microsoft Suite
  • Familiarity with clinical progress note taking through EPIC EHR 
  • Comfort with public speaking
  • CPR and PEERRS certified within 1 year of hire

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
