Full Job Description
Newsroom Internship-Missoula, MT
The Missoulian, a Lee Enterprises Inc. newspaper is seeking applicants for a 10-week paid news internship over the summer. Missoula is a rapidly changing community, and the newsroom works hard to shine a light on residents and news stories in all neighborhoods. Our journalists watch over how taxpayer money is spent and how public officials represent their constituents, and cover issues that affect people's lives.
As a general assignment intern this summer, you'll assist these reporters in research and information gathering, write news stories and cover events that give readers a taste of Missoula. You'll have the chance to help cover breaking news, including during Montana's wildfire season, learn from seasoned reporters and editors, write about Missoula's vibrant arts and entertainment scene, cover the outdoors, and gain invaluable experience.
Qualified candidates should be inquisitive self-starters who are capable of producing compelling content for our digital and print platforms. Interns should feel empoweredto find and pitch great stories about our increasingly diverse communities. We want multitaskers who can juggle multiple assignments and embrace all facets of multimedia storytelling. We will provide an atmosphere of collaboration and support for all interns.
Interns will work alongside professional journalists in our newsroom, who will provide guidance, direction and support. Interns will receive customized training on topics such as how to develop sources, how to prioritize diversity and inclusion in news coverage and how to pitch a great story. They'll also have access to Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists who are part of the Lee Enterprises network of 72 news markets across the U.S.
Ideal applicants should be enrolled in college or be recent college graduates. They also should have either completed at least one previous internship in a media market, or comparable work for a college news outlet.
Exceptional interns will be considered for full-time, permanent employment at the conclusion of the program.
Interns should have their own transportation and valid driver license to travel to assignments and must be available to work a flexible schedule, including some nights and weekends.
When applying, please submit the following items: a cover letter; a resume detailing relevant journalism experience; and five examples of published journalism work.
Lee Enterprises is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We respect and celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. For more information about Lee, check us out at www.lee.net . We are focused on building a diverse and inclusive workforce.
