Job Summary

Responsibilities


Math Instructors will facilitate programming that provides highly motivated 7th-9th grade scholars with the opportunity to explore what it means to engage in robust mathematical thinking: solving problems creatively, asking why and collaborating with others. All program participants have been application vetted. Instructor duties include:

  • Facilitating small group and whole-class discussion of interesting math puzzles, celebrating a variety of problem-solving approaches and providing thoughtful hints to guide scholar exploration
  • Building a math community inside the classroom and pushing scholars to draw on one another as resources
  • Monitoring scholar attendance and progress

Position Details

  • This part-time temporary position is hybrid for applicants located in Southeast Michigan and fully remote for applicants located outside of southeast Michigan.
  • We require your full commitment to the program session dates for which you are applying.
  • The compensation for this position is $22-30/hour, dependent on experience with teaching/outreach. 

    Required Dates


    Instructors must attend the mandatory professional development and all required dates.

    Fall Session

    • Dates:
      • 2.5 hours of online pre-session professional development from 10am-12:30pm on Saturday, December 14th.
      • Four Saturdays online on 02/01, 02/08, 02/15 and 03/01
      • Two Saturdays in person on the University of Michigan Ann Arbor campus on 3/8 and 3/15. Applicants residing outside of Southeast Michigan this winter will be excused from these two days.
    • Time: Synchronous facilitation time with scholars, preparation time and record-keeping time totaling 6-7 hours each week. Of this total time, 3 hours will be synchronous class time with scholars, 1 hour will be a synchronous professional learning session and the remainder will be asynchronous preparation/record-keeping time.

In support of this overarching effort, four units within our office - the Center for Educational Outreach (CEO), Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives (OAMI), and Wolverine Pathways - all work closely with ODEI to further the strategic vision of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at the University of Michigan.

    Required Qualifications*

    • Comfort working through challenging middle-school math problems and a deep understanding of why the math works
    • Comfort facilitating a variety of student approaches to middle school math problems- ability to provide guidance and see different solutions methods through to the end
    • Practiced and/or intuitive understanding of how to guide and assist students in learning for themselves and forming working relationships with peers - picking apart ideas and exploring content, forming their own thoughts about them, presenting those thoughts to others
    • Experience engaging and/or instructing virtually on platforms such as Zoom
    • Excellent communication, problem-solving and organizational skills
    • Evidence of ability-based competencies to include: communicating with diverse groups; displaying tact and courtesy; maintaining confidentiality; setting priorities; attending to detail; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships

      Modes of Work

      The work requirements allow both onsite and offsite work and an employee has an expected recurring onsite presence. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by unit leadership or their designee and/or the job requirements.
