What You'll Do

The Center for Academic Innovation at the University of Michigan is looking for a qualified Learning Experience Designer Senior (Faculty Development) to support our degree programs through design and faculty development. You will support academic units with the development of online degree programs by supporting faculty through a variety of modalities to facilitate quality online learning experiences. You will report to the Learning Experience Design Lead and also work with the Director of Blended and Online Learning Experience Design.

About the Online Learning Domain 

The Learning Experience Design Team design team supports course design and iteration for online and hybrid degree programs at U-M, and a range of ongoing activities related to the operation of existing programs. We work with faculty and academic unit leaders to envision how they can expand the reach and effect, promote teaching, and support greater access and lifelong learning through the design, and iteration of integrated online learning experiences.

Responsibilities*

Online Faculty Development 

  • Lead professional development opportunities in multiple modalities in pedagogical practices for teaching online and create quality online learning experiences.
  • Develop stand-alone resources to assist instructors in developing and teaching online and hybrid courses in collaboration with members of the Online Learning domain
  • Identify and collaborate with relevant experts from academic and administrative units across campus to help create resources that address many discipline-specific pedagogical needs
  • Develop and customize online teaching content and materials according to academic
    units needs.
  • Provide consultations and develop learning experiences about teaching online.
  • Coordinate and facilitate cohort-based learning experiences for instructors engaging in online teaching academy activities, workshops, and events
  • Transition faculty from "design" phase to the "teaching" phase on an online course development process. Lead workshops and office hours to help faculty with facilitating online teaching.
  • Develop and facilitate a community of practice for instructors developing and teaching online and hybrid courses in collaboration with the other members of the CAI learning experience design community.
  • Consult with programs to coordinate educational opportunities for faculty teaching in the online space.
  • Partner with CAI's Marketing and Market Strategy team and develop content for the Online Teaching website. 

Faculty Experience 

  • Be a liaison for the faculty experience throughout the design process, bringing reflections and experience from faculty interactions to CAI teams.
  • Promote excellence in the faculty experience, through evaluation of design processes and adherence to the Center's exceptional service model.
  • Identify appropriate milestones and methods for measuring faculty experience and sentiment throughout the innovation experience.
  • Implement clear feedback mechanisms to refine services to improve the experience.
  • Provide Online Learning domain leadership with recommendations for service-oriented improvements during the end-to-end lifecycle of a project.
  • Develop channels for increasing the visibility of, and celebrating, faculty contributions to academic innovation. 

Online Course Design 

  • Lead complex course design projects with a focus on pedagogical approaches that result in engaging online learning experiences by advocating for learner-centered instructional strategies, and aligning learning outcomes with activities and assessments to ensure continuity between outcomes, course content, and design goals
  • Collaborate with faculty, program leaders, Learning Experience Designers, Design Managers, and Media Designers at the Center for Academic Innovation (CAI) to design high-quality online and hybrid courses
  • Apply a range of instructional design methods and learning theories to learner-centered course design. Implement inclusive design approaches, considering diverse audiences of learners, and foregrounding issues of equity and accessibility throughout the design process
  • Support partner and team member relationships, process management, and project success
  • Define a scope of work in response to affordances and constraints introduced by program requirements and project partners while ensuring a high-quality course design
  • Use DEI-focused design and inclusive design strategies to create more equitable online courses 

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in education, educational psychology, learning sciences, instructional design, or educational technology
  • 3 or more years of experience (or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience)
  • Experience with learning theories, instructional design methods, and learner-centered design principles, and the ability to explain related concepts
  • Experience collaborating with a variety of instructor roles (e.g. tenure track, adjunct, clinical, or graduate student instructors) in a higher education environment
  • Experience teaching in an online environment
  • Expertise in assessing project outcomes and making recommendations for improvement and iteration
  • Experience using online education platforms and tools (e.g., Canvas, Coursera, and edX)
  • Experience working in a collaborative team environment
  • Demonstrated initiative and service-oriented attitude

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Additional Information

Please Note: This is a 5 year term limited position with the possibility of renewal depending on funding.

The mode of work for this position is Hybrid. The work requirements for this position allow both onsite and offsite work and you will have an expected regular and recurring onsite presence. On occasion, you may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by our center's policy and domain leadership or by your job requirements.

Salary Information 

The salary for this position will be based on your education and experience. 

The general salary range for this position is $75,000 - $83,000. You can expect to be paid a great compensation package. Factors used to determine salary include education level, experience for the position and internal equity within the unit. You are encouraged to discuss salary questions to honor agreement and transparency throughout the recruiting process.
