Responsibilities*

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

  • The Laboratory Technician can be assigned to perform one or more of the following functions, with a minimum of high school diploma and under supervision of a CLIA qualified General Supervisor

Provide Clerical/Administrative Support

  • Answer phones, take messages and route calls.
  • Scan documents (requisitions and worksheets); organize and file test reports and documents.
  • Communicate with lab staff, clinicians, and other customers to meet customer service goals and maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Assist with the laboratory's inventory of supplies and reagents. Receive and unpack shipments. Stock lab supplies as needed.

Accessioning, Specimen Processing and Distribution

  • PathTrack specimens to receive and send specimens between departments.
  • Accession and process samples. This includes receiving, centrifuging, aliquoting, and isolating DNA from patient samples.
  • Use MediaLab (document control), MiChart (EMR), and Soft (LIS) to accession patient samples.
  • Identify and correct specimen and order issues: duplicate tests, missing information, missing or incorrect samples, and unacceptable specimens.
  • Work with laboratory colleagues to process and prioritize patient samples in preparation for genetic testing.  

Laboratory Support

  • Perform and document daily instrument maintenance.
  • Enter test results into laboratory databases.
  • Monitoring the status of reagents, parts, and supplies.
  • Perform basic instrument troubleshooting. Document problems, action taken and outcomes in instrument logbooks.
  • Perform general lab tasks: bench cleaning; workstation stocking, temperatures taking; refrigerator, freezer, centrifuge maintenance, biohazard and chemical waste disposal.

Perform Testing

Only applicable for individuals with a bachelor's or associate degree under supervision*

  • Perform and document quality control and proficiency testing for high complexity tests. Act on out-of-range quality control values.*
  • Perform high complexity testing: PCR, rqPCR, fragment analysis, MLPA, sequencing, chromosomal microarrays.*
  • Analyze patient samples and report test results.*
  • Add abnormal test results into the laboratory database.*

Other Duties

  • Complete continuing education as required.
  • Teach MLS students, genetic counselors, residents, fellows how to isolate DNA, use equipment, and report out results.
  • Maintain personal competencies for all assigned sections.
  • Other laboratory duties as assigned.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Accession and isolate DNA from patient samples for testing in the MMGL Molecular Genetics Laboratory. Individuals with a bachelor's or associated degree with the CLIA required college science classes can be train on high complexity testing for use in the diagnosis and treatment of genetic diseases.

Required Qualifications*

In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.

  • Bachelor's degree, associate's degree, or high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Please note that individuals with a bachelor's degree are eligible to take the ASCP Technologist in Molecular Biology exam after working full time for 1 year. An Individual with a MB(ASCP) certification is eligible to apply for a future MLS position in the lab.
  • Requires frequent standing or sitting, hand pipetting, and the ability to lift up to 25 lbs.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in a clinical laboratory.
  • Previous experience in following standard laboratory procedures.

Work Schedule

This full time, 40 hour position is on the day shift, currently there are no weekend or holidays routinely scheduled.  May participate in an on-call schedule for temperature monitoring with other staff.

This position is included in the bargaining unit represented by the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which represents bargaining unit members in all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
