SUNY Maritime College located on a 55-acre scenic waterfront property on the outskirts of New York City on the Throggs Neck peninsula where the East River meets Long Island Sound. The State University of New York Maritime College is an undergraduate and graduate institution focused on engineering, business, science, and maritime transportation. The College proudly supports twenty varsity sport teams represented by eight different athletic conferences. The College is located at historic Fort Schuyler in Throggs Neck, New York, just 14 miles from midtown Manhattan.


Job Description:

The Head Men's Soccer Coach is a full-time, year-round position responsible for leading and managing all aspects of an NCAA Division III soccer program. This role includes recruiting and developing student-athletes, fostering a positive and inclusive team culture, and ensuring compliance with institutional, conference, and NCAA regulations. The coach will collaborate with athletic department staff to support the holistic development of student-athletes and contribute to the mission and goals of the department and institution.

Key responsibilities include organizing and conducting practices, developing competitive strategies, overseeing assistant coaches, managing program budgets, coordinating team travel, and promoting academic success and personal growth among team members. The Head Coach will serve as a mentor and leader for the student-athletes while embodying the values of sportsmanship, integrity, and excellence. Additionally, the position may include secondary responsibilities within the athletic department, such as facility oversight, administrative duties, or other assignments based on the candidate's skill set and departmental needs.

POSITION DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Plan, organize, and conduct practice sessions and competitions to enhance team performance
  • Develop and implement strategies to maximize individual and team potential while promoting sportsmanship and ethical behavior
  • Analyze and evaluate individual and team performance through video review and other tools
  • Oversee the recruitment and retention of academically and athletically qualified student-athletes
  • Foster a positive and inclusive team culture that supports personal growth, diversity, and well-being
  • Ensure the program operates in strict compliance with institutional, conference, and NCAA regulations
  • Manage program budgets, including purchasing equipment, apparel, and supplies, and monitoring expenditures
  • Coordinate team travel arrangements, including transportation, lodging, and meals
  • Maintain accurate records related to recruiting, practice schedules, and competition results
  • Attend athletic department meetings and contribute to departmental initiatives and goals
  • Promote academic success and retention by monitoring academic progress and providing guidance to student-athletes
  • Collaborate with academic support services and other campus resources to support student-athlete wellbeing
  • Serve as a mentor and role model, emphasizing leadership, discipline, and personal accountability
  • Assist with the maintenance and operation of aquatics facilities in collaboration with the athletic department and campus partners
  • Support event management for home competitions, including scheduling officials and overseeing meet logistics
  • Supervise and evaluate assistant coaches, graduate assistants, or other program staff
  • Collaborate with athletic trainers, strength and conditioning staff, and other support personnel to ensure the health and performance of student-athletes
  • Represent the institution and program positively through public appearances, alumni engagement, and community outreach
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with diverse groups, including student athletes, colleagues, and external stakeholders
  • Proven leadership ability with a commitment to fostering teamwork and collaboration
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail for managing multiple responsibilities
  • In-depth knowledge of techniques, training methods, and competition strategies
  • A commitment to the educational mission and values of NCAA Division III athletics, including prioritizing the holistic development of student-athletes




Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Demonstrated soccer coaching experience
  • Exemplary ethical conduct and conformance to NCAA rules and regulations with specific knowledge of Division III rules
  • Excellent interpersonal, teaching and communication skills are essential
  • Ability to recruit student athletes, develop successful programs and maintain operations (budget, equipment ordering, NCAA eligibility, game management, etc.)
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License. Must have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violation


Additional Information:

Classification/Salary Range: This position is a college year (10 months) part-time UUP position. The anticipated salary for the position is $12,000.00 subject to proration for the remaining of the Academic Year 2024-2025. Review of applications will commence immediately and conclude when position is filled.

Special Notes: FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.

Preseason

  • Weekly Average: 8-10 hours
  • Total (Assuming 3 Weeks): 24-30 hours

In-Season

  • Weekly Average: 8-12 hours
  • Total (Assuming 10 Weeks): 80-120 hours
  • Weekly Schedule: varies by week, 4 practice days for 2-3 hours, 1 competition day for 3-4 hours

Postseason

  • Weekly Average: 5-7 hours
  • Total (Assuming 1.5 Weeks): 7.5-10.5 hours

Off-Season

  • Weekly Average: 2-4 hours
  • Total of 22 weeks
