Course Description

The Department of Sociology is seeking to hire GSIs for the Winter 2025 term. Fraction appointments will range from .25 to .50. Please see the course guide for discussion times and
locations. Placements will not be finalized until mid/late November, and offer-letters will be sent out around that time.


The courses seeking GSIs are:

  • Sociology 100 -- Intro to Sociology (4 positions available)
    • SOC 100.001 (McGinn): 1 position @ .50 Fraction
      • MW 2:30-4pm (LEC), W 8-9am, 9-10am, 10-11am (DIS)
    • SOC 100.020 (Gaston): 1 position @.50 Fraction
      •  MW 10-11:30am (LEC), T 3-4pm, 4-5pm, 5-6pm (DIS)
    • SOC 100.040 (Diossa-Jimenez): 1 position @ .50 Fraction, 1 position @ .25 Fraction
    • Sociology 102.001 -- Introduction to Sociology: Race and Class in U.S. Cities and Suburbs
      (Robinson): 3 positions @ .50 Fraction
    • Sociology 208 -- Terrorism, Torture and Violence (Gocek): 1 position @ .50 Fraction, 1 position @ .35 Fraction
    • Sociology 210 -- Introduction to Statistics for Social Science (Ybarra): 5 positions available: 4 positions @ .50 Fraction, 1 Head GSI @ .50 Fraction
    • Sociology 221 -- Social Inequality (Sullivan): 2 positions available @ .50 Fraction
    • Sociology 225 - Project Community (Christensen): 1 position available @ .50 Fraction
    • Sociology 302 -- Introduction to Sociology: Health & Society (Burgard): 3 positions @ .50 Fraction
    • Sociology 303 -- Race and Ethnic Relations (Mahan): 2 positions @ .35 Fraction

    Responsibilities*

    Responsible for teaching discussion sections, holding office hours, administering exams and grading. Attend lectures and assist instructor in preparing course materials.

    Required Qualifications*

    To be considered for this position, you must be a University of Michigan graduate student in good standing, taking at least 6 credit hours in the term you are applying for.

    Desired Qualifications*

    LSA student enrolled in a graduate program.

    Modes of Work

    Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Considerations include academic qualifications and prior teaching experience, as well as course preference. The Sociology Department will make reasonable effort to extend offers within 3 weeks after the application due date. If offered a GSI position, the deadline to respond to offer letters is one week from the distribution date of the letter. Applicants may request the status of their application from the Sociology Department.
