Course Description

ENGR 499 (Designing Your Engineering Future) leverages students past UM experiences to communicate their development of various professional competencies such as teamwork, leadership, ethics, entrepreneurial mindset, and creativity. Through discussions with peers and industry mentors, students will reflect on their experiences and create a set of guiding principles and a professional statement for their future.

Responsibilities*

The Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) for ENGR 499 will be assigned to co-teach with the primary instructor. You will work with the instructor to coordinate logistics and instruct topics for ENGR 499. This includes compiling course materials, managing the Canvas course shell, posting assignments and resources, grading homework, arranging lecture capture, tracking attendance and arranging make-up work, creating and maintaining facilitation guides for each session, offer office hours as requested by students, and designing and teaching material in class along with the instructor. This is a part-time appointment (25% effort).

Required Qualifications*

To be considered for this position, you must be a University of Michigan graduate student in good standing, taking at least 6 credit hours in the term for which you are applying. Applicants must have completed a course that includes a senior-level reflection component in their undergraduate degree, such as ENGR 430 (Honors Seminar III), ENGR 456 (Mentorship-Leadership in Multidisciplinary Design), ENGR 460 (Engineering Across Cultures II), EECS 496 (Major Design Experience-Professionalism), ENGR 499 (Design Your Engineering Future), or some other equivalent course at your undergraduate institution.

Applicants must be available to attend all class meeting times, which will be held on Wednesdays from 3:30pm to 5:30pm on North Campus.

Desired Qualifications*

Applicants should have experience facilitating discussion, either from a role as an Instructional Aide, or from other experiences such as working with Intergroup Relations, serving as an ENGR 110 Departmental Ambassador, serving as a Common Reading Experience facilitator, or other experiences. Preference will be given to applicants with prior experience co-teaching this course.

Selection Process

Candidates are selected by the ENGR 499 instructional team. A representative from the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education?s office will notify candidates by email if they are selected for an interview.
