Job Summary
Custodial Services provides cleaning services to University of Michigan administrative and academic buildings on the Ann Arbor campus. We service over 13 million square feet of floor space in over 250 buildings. Building Services employs over 400 people consisting of custodial, pest management, support, administrative and managerial staff.
Our mission is to maintain the facilities to provide a sanitary, safe and pleasant environment for the University of Michigan's students, faculty, staff and guests.
Custodial and Grounds staff are considered critical employees which means, in the event of a University of Michigan emergency reduction in operations, including a public health emergency, suspension of academic classes, or during weather-related reductions in operations, the Director of Custodial and Grounds Services has designated this position as critical. The work this department performs allows for the continuance of patient care, student housing, animal husbandry, utility distribution, snow removal, debris removal, and other critical infrastructure support.

Responsibilities*
The Custodian II performs all Custodian I job duties using our team cleaning system, which includes the use of a backpack vacuum weighing between 13-20 pounds. In addition, the Custodian II operates mechanical cleaning and scrubbing equipment, strips and waxes floor surfaces, and maintains entrance area by performing such duties as sweeping, salting, and shoveling snow as required.
Required Qualifications*
- Must have a high school diploma or GED.
- Ability to effectively communicate with and follow instructions from co-workers, supervisors, customers, and facility managers.
- Ability to wear a backpack vacuum weighing between 13-20 pounds for up to 8 hours a day.
- Strong floor care skills.
- Ability to effectively clean/maintain areas that are located in various positions, including several feet off the floor, close to the floor, and under/around obstacles.
- Must be able to perform all duties in the job classification with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Work Schedule
The work schedule for this job opening is Monday-Friday, 5:00pm-1:30am.
