Job Summary

We are looking for two individuals to join our biogeochemistry and harmful algal blooms teams at the University of Michigan's Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab (NOAA GLERL). Under the direction of project principal investigators, the Biogeochemistry Laboratory Analysts will work collaboratively with CIGLR and NOAA GLERL scientists to:

  1. Perform laboratory analyses related to aquatic biogeochemistry in the Great Lakes and their watersheds.
  2. Contribute data analyses, visualizations, and writing towards presentations and publications pertaining to nutrient eutrophication, harmful algal blooms, hypoxia, and biogeochemical processes.

This position can be filled at the Research Laboratory Specialist Associate or Intermediate level depending on experience.

This position is open only to US Citizens or permanent residents due to federal security clearance required for access to NOAA GLERL facilities and resources.

Term Appointment: This is a one-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal.

Responsibilities*

  • Analyze nutrients and other water quality parameters using established analytical chemistry methods, including operating and maintaining continuous and segmented flow-through and discrete autoanalyzer instruments.
  • Maintain datasets, laboratory records, sample inventories, and standard operating procedures.
  • Summarize and analyze data to support presentations and manuscripts.
  • Perform quality control measures and assist with the development of new analytical methods.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science or related field. A master's degree is preferred.
  • Upper-level coursework in analytical chemistry or related to surface water chemistry.
  • Professional or academic experience working in a laboratory with at least one year of experience performing analytical chemistry related to nutrients, water quality, or biogeochemistry.
  • Experience working independently on problem-solving and troubleshooting issues with instrumentation and analytical chemistry.
  • Experience with data management and analysis using products such as R, Python, or similar platforms.

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Salary and classification will be determined based on experience.
