Job Summary

The Survey Research Center (SRC) within the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research (ISR) is seeking an economist at the rank of Associate or Full Research Scientist to join its highly successful research program in health and retirement.

We are interested in appointing a scholar with exceptional leadership skills and demonstrated commitment to scientific excellence. Appointment to this position at the Associate level requires a growing national and/or international scholarly reputation and a record of publication in peer-reviewed journals. A candidate for this rank should have a record of participation in or presentation at professional meetings. Appointment at the highest rank in the Research Scientist Track requires an internationally recognized record of continued excellence in research productivity and contributions. A Research Scientist will have a sustained record of publications in peer-reviewed journals, including as first-author and/or senior author. A significant and sustained record of participation in relevant professional meetings is expected of a Research Scientist.

At the Associate level, independence in research funding is not required but may be developing as represented by a substantial record of collaborative funding as a team scientist (usually as co-investigator). A full Research Scientist must have evidence of success with external funding and may have served as principal investigator on center grants, major grants (e.g. NIH R01) or equivalent.

The candidate must have the ability to thrive in the entrepreneurial, interdisciplinary, and collaborative environment of SRC. The ideal candidate would be a scientific leader in the field of economics, or closely-related social or policy science discipline, with a history of interdisciplinary collaborations, and demonstrated focus on research relevant to health and aging. Prior experience managing survey design, fieldwork, web-based data collection, administrative linkages, or other aspects of data production and dissemination are highly desirable.

The research program in health and retirement is anchored by the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), a global leader in innovative multi-disciplinary survey research. Allied research projects in medicine, economics, psychology, epidemiology and other fields build on and complement the HRS.

Responsibilities*

The successful candidate will work with other HRS investigators and study collaborators and technical staff to adapt its approaches for economic measurement to new realities and new technologies. They will be expected to:

  • Effectively collaborate as a member of the HRS scientific team
  • Oversee the creation of data products, documentation and user materials
  • Participate in development of research funding for the HRS and related projects
  • Conduct scholarly research related to one or more themes in the economics of aging, which include the measurement of income, wealth, consumption, pensions, and government benefits; the study of retirement and disability; health and health care

The successful candidate may participate in and develop a portfolio of independently funded research projects. Salary is highly competitive. The Health and Retirement Study (https://hrs.isr.umich.edu/) is a public resource supported by the National Institute on Aging (U01AG0009740) and the Social Security Administration. It supports over 25,000 registered research users of the data and over 300 annual publications in peer-reviewed journals. SRC (http://www.src.isr.umich.edu) is an international leader in interdisciplinary social science research involving the collection and analysis of survey data. SRC also advances the scientific method of social research through teaching and training.

Required Qualifications*

PhD in economics or a related field.
