About this role:

Wells Fargo is seeking an Assistant General Counsel, VP - Cards & Merchant Services Legal Group. For additional information on this line of business, refer to the external Careers Site at Wellsfargo.com/career.


In this role, you will:

  • Primary responsibilities will involve coordinating and communicating across cross-disciplinary teams of attorneys, risk and compliance partners, and line of business clients on multiple high-level projects and initiatives.
  • Be responsible for providing advice and guidance on complex legal and regulatory matters, including various federal and state regulations and laws impacting the Merchant Services group, as well as analyzing the corresponding policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Expertly handle matters that have a significant impact on the Company's operations, strategies, or profitability.
  • Develop relationships with and provide guidance to Legal Department senior leadership, executive officers, and senior business leadership across the Company on issues that may present legal, regulatory, compliance, or reputational risk to the Company.
  • Take an active role in the education, training, and mentoring of less senior Legal Department team members.

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of Law experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
  • Active State Bar membership or the equivalent in a country outside the United States


Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience at a merchant acquirer, debit/credit card issuer, fintech and/or payment network ideal.
  • Experience as a practicing attorney, preferably within a large financial institution or AmLaw 100 law firm.
  • Experience with credit card/debit card network rules and regulations.
  • Experience with federal and/or state licensing or acquiring and/or money transmitter rules and regulations.
  • Experience with BSA/AML, OFAC. KYC and other financial crimes requirements
  • Ability to analyze legal and regulatory issues in area of practice and provide effective advice to clients on complex legal matters.
  • Extensive experience conducting research and analysis and providing counsel and guidance regarding complex legal issues.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work while handling multiple matters.
  • Ability to work effectively in a complex environment with a high degree of collaboration.
  • Effective in building partnerships, functioning well with project teams, and working for the success of the team.


Job Expectations:

  • Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
  • This position is not eligible for Visa sponsorship.
  • Ability to work a hybrid schedule (in office at least 3 days a week) at one of our approved job posting locations.
  • Ability to travel up to 5%

Pay Range

Reflected is the base pay range offered for this position. Pay may vary depending on factors including but not limited to achievements, skills, experience, or work location. The range listed is just one component of the compensation package offered to candidates.

$144,400.00 - $300,000.00
