Assistant Director of Cultural Services

JOB SUMMARY:

This position plays a vital role in assisting the Director with the overall management of arts and entertainment programming, departmental initiatives, and operational oversight at the Al Larson Prairie Center for the Arts. This dynamic role requires an in-depth understanding of theatrical production, live performance, and youth arts programs. The Assistant Director is integral in fostering community engagement, promoting the arts center as a regional hub for cultural events, and supporting the vision for arts education and creative expression. This position will collaborate closely with village staff, local arts organizations, and patrons to enhance the cultural vibrancy of Schaumburg and the greater Chicago metropolitan area.

The Cultural Services Department has two main responsibilities - activities related to the Al Larson Prairie Center for the Arts and special events management. The Prairie Center serves as the hub of arts activities for the Northwest suburbs. Arts and entertainment events are showcased through live performances throughout the season, as well as the Young Artists Programs, which highlight the talents of local students in various artistic disciplines, including orchestra, song, musical theatre, and dance. The Special Events division oversees coordination of village-sponsored events including Septemberfest and the Prairie Arts Festival.

JOB DUTIES:

1.    Collaborates with the Director in the planning, execution, and evaluation of arts and cultural programs, ensuring alignment with departmental goals and community needs. Recommends strategies and improvements to enhance program effectiveness, operational efficiencies, and audience engagement. 
2.    Develops and curates an engaging season of cultural programs for the theater, including selecting the performances, events, and collaborations, ensuring a balance of genres, themes, and audience appeal, while closely monitoring financial performance to stay within budget and maximize revenue potential. 
3.    Supervises and supports staff and program managers, offering guidance in the execution of day-to-day operations. Oversees the professional development and performance evaluation of staff involved in various programming areas. 
4.    Oversees the Schaumburg Young Artists Programs, including the Schaumburg Youth Orchestra, Choral Program, Summer Theatre, Dance Ensemble, and Student Film Festival, and evaluates program outcomes and continuously seeks innovative methods for enriching the young arts experience. 
5.    Enhances partnerships with local schools, organizations, and businesses to foster greater community involvement in arts initiatives.
6.    Oversees the development and execution of marketing, advertising, and public relations strategies to promote cultural programs, and build an engaged and diverse audience.   Works collaboratively with the marketing team to develop compelling content, social media campaigns, and promotional materials to increase visibility and participation.
7.    Assists the Director in developing and managing the annual budget for cultural programs, including operations and capital improvements. Monitors financial performance, ensuring responsible budget allocation and identifying cost-saving opportunities. Works with the Director and the Prairie Center Arts Foundation to secure additional funding through grants, sponsorships, and fundraising efforts to sustain and grow arts programs. 
8.    Represents the department at public meetings, cultural commissions, and community events, ensuring the Village’s cultural services are well-represented. Attends and supports the activities of the Cultural Commission and Sister Cities Commission, providing reports and updates on program initiatives. 
9.    Coordinates with external vendors, artists, and performers to deliver high-quality experiences for audiences and participants. Provides on-the-ground support during events to ensure smooth operations and troubleshoot issues as they arise. 
10.    Performs other duties as assigned.

STARTING SALARY RANGE:  $107,845.00 - $144,243.00 annually dependent on qualifications. The salary range for this position is $107,845.00 - $156,376.00.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1.    Bachelor’s degree in communications, public administration, theatre management, arts administration, or related field.  
2.    Master’s degree preferred. If the candidate does not possess a master’s degree at the time of hire, they must obtain it within five years of employment/promotion.
3.    A minimum of five years of recent experience in theatre management or arts administration, with a focus on live performance, programming, and community engagement. 
4.    A minimum of three years of managerial experience coordinating a range of activities undertaken by others that involve directing, monitoring, and evaluating the performance of staff.
5.    Proficiency with current computer technology, job-specific software, and customer service systems.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1.    Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required by program schedules and special events.
2.    Ability to lift and carry 25 pounds frequently.
