Job Summary
The Section of General Surgery and the Divisions of Endocrine Surgery, Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery at Michigan Medicine are seeking a qualified Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) to join our team. The PAs and NPs support the faculty and resident teams to provide patient care for adult general surgery patients. This is a great opportunity for motivated professionals to provide patient care through diagnosis and treatment of surgical patients across a broad spectrum within Michigan Medicine.

Responsibilities*
The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) will participate in all aspects of inpatient care for patients admitted to the endocrine surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and bariatric surgery service. They may sporadically participate in outpatient clinic follow-up of patients after discharge. This position will also offer the opportunity to collaborate with surgeons, nurses, and residents in quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives. These job duties may be modified depending on the needs of the Section of General Surgery and the Divisions of Endocrine and Minimally Invasive Surgery.
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Inpatient rounding and order entry
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests
- Coordinate with consulting teams
- Maintain complete documentation of patient care
- Serve as first contact for patient care, respond to questions from nursing and other healthcare professionals via EMR secure chat, page, and phone
- Lead daily multidisciplinary rounds with case managers, pharmacists, social workers, and others
- Order and prescribe medications in accordance with statutes, rules and regulations of the State of Michigan
- Wound/ostomy care
- Maintenance, troubleshooting, and removal of nasogastric tubes and surgical drains
- Educate and counsel patient and family members on disease pathophysiology, management, and trajectory
- Manage peri-procedural risk assessments and medication management recommendations for all procedures and surgeries

Required Qualifications*
Required Qualifications (PA):
- Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
- Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan
Required Qualifications (NP):
- Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program and certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
- Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and certification as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Michigan.
Required Qualifications for both PA and NP candidates:
- BLS certification
- NPI registration
- Current DEA registration
- State of Michigan Controlled Substance license

Desired Qualifications*
- One (1) year clinical experience in an inpatient setting as an APP

- Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with learners
- Familiarity and competence with electronic medical records systems
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a collaborative team

- Experience with a multidisciplinary team approach to patient care
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize assignments and manage a busy work environment
Work Schedule
Hours: 40 hours per week
Work Schedule: Day shift. Start time 5:30am. Shift length not to exceed 13 hours.

Union Affiliation
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
